Director of Design [UX or Product Design] at well-funded Big Data startup with a heart, pre-IPO options

Location: New York, NY

Our well-funded, pre-IPO startup in the Big Data space is seeking a fulltime Director of Design – you’re an inspiring design leader who likes to NERD OUT on wrangling big data to improve the world we live in. And you care deeply about that mission, because you care deeply about our world, and all the living things in it. Empathy drives you.

Our client believes in the transformative power of data and is excited by its potential to drive impactful change for the world’s preeminent companies and organizations. Indeed, they boast one of the largest repositories of public data – they’ve centralized and connected *billions* of public records – and they’ve used this data in myriad ways. For instance, in concert with the Red Cross, they’ve been instrumental in connecting disparate data sets across a major US city to save lives through fire prevention…and helped a major manufacturing company optimize its supply chain for maximum efficiency and minimum waste. It’s dizzying the kinds of ways their technology and data can be used, and you’re jazzed at the prospect of discovering more!

This ideal Director of Design is someone who loves designing massive, complex enterprise software, BI tools, SaaS - your mantra is “the bigger the UX challenge, the better!” – and you’ve got a warm, engaging, motivating personality to be the 4-person design team’s “mentor-coach”. You get in the trenches with them, and INSPIRE them with your awesome design expertise and magnanimous, egoless awesome self!

You’ll also be driving the product design vision end to end, and working with many different disciplines – Data Scientists, Developers, Product Managers – and you’ll also be operating in many different worlds out there, as they’re industry-agnostic: manufacturing, civic, healthcare, finance, data tech, and so on.

You will have the chance to grow quickly within their rapidly scaling company, and indeed, you thrive in a highly iterative environment and aren’t put off by ambiguity – in fact, you look at that as fertile ground for enacting great change and progress! You probably have some startup experience, or some entrepreneurial ventures of your own.

You will act as a crucial conduit between their clients and their  commercial, product and engineering teams, ensuring design thinking is a part of everything they do. Design has a massively visible and important seat the table here, and isn’t second fiddle to their robust tech department – there is friendly collaboration abound in their highly Agile, transparent, rapidly iterating environment.

The ideal candidate:

  • You come from a UX, Visual UI, or Product Design background – they’re open to seeing a range of “flavors” of backgrounds – and you’ve overseen and given design direction to both UX and Visual UI Designers
  • 5+ years experience designing products from conception to launch
  • A lovely, product-geared portfolio full of clean, elegant, complex work
  • You’ve had direct management experience of at least 3-4 people concurrently, if not more
  • Passionate about the potential of data products to solve important problems in both the public and private sectors
  • You are egoless, friendly, collaborative, and inspirational. You own who you are and are a fabulous communicator
  • There’s not a ton of hands-on work at your level, but you actively enjoy getting in the design trenches with your team from time to time
  • You honor your craft
  • You love stepping into the shoes of users, thinking strategically about how to deliver value to clients, and can lead multiple projects from concept to completion
  • They’re rebranding currently, and you have experience bringing a consistent voice from both Marketing and Branding all the way through to a complete product experience – you can tie it all together holistically, and implement the new brand across products
  • Experience with rapid digital prototyping methods and processes, as well as user research
  • Ability to clearly communicate design priorities and principles to a variety of stakeholders and adapt quickly to change
  • Open to receiving feedback and creating a culture of constructive criticism
  • Experience designing for B2B, SaaS or BI tools a plus
  • An inherent generosity, strong intellectual curiosity and hustle

Perks:

Pre-IPO option grants, competitive salary, 401K matching, continued education (manager trainings, Lunch-N-Learns, skillbuilding for all employees), mandatory day off for voting, engaged and interested founders of the company (one has a PhD in cultural anthropology), flexible work-from-home policy, an employee solely dedicated to culture, and lots of fun events and outings, including some killer karaoke jams.
