VISUAL: Creative Director (Visual UI): be a visionary leader at FinTech product co making investing accessible + delightful

Location: New York, NY
Van Halen once sang, "It's the best - of - both worlds". Sammy Hagar might well have been singing about this job. This CD role is a mix of complex innovation at a FinTech product company, with an agency-like environment where you will be selling in ideas, concepts, designs, and a startup way of life to the startup team at large, as well as to the large financial institution that acquired them and is hungry and open to learning and incorporating "startup" ways.

Their VP of Design, your future mentor + manager, is someone we've worked with for years, and she's incredible - she's probably one of the most direct, transparent, savvy people you'll ever work alongside, and she instills loyalty in those she's worked with and have followed her to her current role. Indeed, the company has fantastic female leadership at the C-level and beyond.

You'll be lighting the way and creating new product offerings in a highly Agile, iterative fashion. for both the "regular guy/gal" user (with a particular bent on the millennial set), and for financial planners. If you're a great presenter and a thought leader in the user-centered-design field, all the better - we'd love to know about that!

Overall, the company's goals are worthy - you'd be helping to empower individuals to budget, save, and invest in a well-informed and enjoyable way, as well as providing tools and systems for financial planners. Technically no longer a start-up, as they were acquired last year by a well-known financial services firm, so you get to enjoy both the high-energy and creative capital of a start-up culture, with the backing of a well-established F100 company. You’ll be overseeing a team of 6-8 visual designers and Art Directors, and collaborating closely with the Copy Director and Experience Director.
You’ll recruit, onboard, mentor, and manage your team of designers, and help drive the future of multiple digital products. As a thought leader, you’ll help plan and drive the short-, medium, and long-term future of the product, including high-level vision. You’re a talented presenter (think: Don(na) Draper of Mad Men in the modern age), and adept at selling-in ideas to high-level stakeholders. You'll enjoy excellent benefits and very reasonable work/life balance.
  • 5+ years of management experience in a creative leadership role (digital agency experience is a plus)
  • A proven history of mentoring, growing junior to senior designer teams while ensuring every pixel is perfect and the work is strategically on point, clean and delightful
  • Significant knowledge of the fundamentals: UI, interaction design, user-centered design, brand development, and how products are put together.
  • Ability to provide clear creative direction as well as timely and prescriptive feedback on work as well as how to improve the design process for the company as a whole.
  • Excellent presentation skills and communication abilities tailored to the audience in the room, including board presentations
  • A track record of product design, including responsive, mobile web, and native app design
  • A passion for being on top of new platforms and technologies.
  • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and contribute to hands-on design as needed
  • Curiosity and appetite for learning
